For twenty years, being found online meant ranking on a page of blue links. That page still matters, but more questions are now answered directly: in a featured snippet, by a voice assistant or in a conversation with ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
If your business isn't part of those answers, you can lose the customer before they ever see your website. Two disciplines have grown up to deal with this: answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO).
What AEO and GEO actually mean
AEO is about earning the direct answer. Search engines and voice assistants pull short, clear answers from pages they trust. The work is making sure your content answers real questions plainly, with a structure machines can read.
GEO goes a step further. Generative AI tools build their own answers by reading many sources. GEO makes sure they understand who you are, what you offer and why you're credible, so they mention you when it counts.
Five practical steps
- Answer the questions your customers actually ask, in their words, near the top of the page.
- Use clear headings, short paragraphs and structured data, so machines can parse what you say.
- Keep your business details consistent everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
- Publish expert content that others cite, because AI tools lean on sources other sites trust.
- Write in every language your customers search in, whether that's Arabic, English, Hindi or Mandarin.
The best content for AI answers is the best content for people: clear, specific and genuinely useful.
How to measure it
Rankings only tell part of the story. We track featured answers, branded searches, referrals from AI tools and, most importantly, the enquiries that follow. Visibility only matters if it turns into business.
